What Are Immediate Dentures?
Unlike conventional dentures, which are made after your teeth are removed and gums have healed (a process that can take several months), immediate dentures are fabricated before your extraction appointment. They are inserted immediately after your teeth are removed. The Benefits
- Instant Aesthetics: You leave the dental chair with a full set of teeth. You don't have to hide your smile or take time off work to wait for healing.
- Protection: The denture acts like a bandage over your extraction sites, which can help control bleeding and protect the sensitive tissue as it heals.
- Adaptation: You can start learning to speak and chew with your new dentures immediately, rather than relearning later.
Comparison with Other Types of Dentures

Full Dentures
Read More
Full dentures are designed to replace all teeth in either your upper arch, lower arch, or both. These custom appliances consist of a complete set of artificial teeth set into a gum-colored acrylic base, creating a seamless and natural-looking smile. They rest directly on your gums and are held in place by natural suction or denture adhesive, restoring your ability to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.

Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are a convenient solution that allows you to have a full set of teeth immediately after extractions. They are fabricated in advance and placed the same day your remaining teeth are removed, so you never have to go without a smile. While they provide immediate aesthetics and help protect healing gum tissue, they may require more adjustments as your gums heal and shrink.

Implant-Supported Dentures
Read More
For unparalleled stability and comfort, implant-supported dentures combine the best of both worlds. These dentures "snap" securely onto a few strategically placed dental implants in your jawbone, offering significantly improved retention compared to traditional dentures. They provide exceptional chewing power and prevent the bone loss that often occurs with conventional dentures, enhancing your quality of life.

Partial Dentures
Read More
Partial dentures are ideal if you still have some healthy natural teeth remaining. These custom appliances fill the gaps created by one or more missing teeth, preventing your existing teeth from shifting out of alignment. They consist of replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored base, often with a subtle metal framework or flexible clasps that gently hold onto your natural teeth for support.
FAQs
Will immediate dentures look natural?
Yes. While they are made before we can see exactly how your gums will look after extraction, Dr. Pham works carefully to ensure the size, shape, and color of the teeth look natural and complement your face.
Is it painful to wear dentures right after extraction?
It is normal to experience some soreness and swelling from the extractions. However, wearing the denture immediately actually helps reduce swelling and pain for many patients because it acts as a protective cover over the open sockets. Dr. Pham will provide instructions on how to manage any discomfort.
Why do immediate dentures become loose?
After teeth are removed, the bone and gums that used to hold them in place begin to shrink (resorb). The most dramatic changes happen in the first 3 to 6 months. Because the denture is hard and your gums are shrinking away from it, the fit will inevitably loosen. This is why a "reline" or a new final denture is necessary once healing is complete.
Can I eat normally right away?
You will need to stick to a soft diet (soups, yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes) for the first few weeks to avoid putting too much pressure on your healing gums. As you heal and get used to the appliance, you can gradually reintroduce solid foods. Dr. Pham will guide you through this transition.
