When we think of a healthy smile, we often focus on bright, white teeth. However, the health of your gums is just as critical. Your gums provide the essential foundation for your teeth, and caring for them is vital for your overall well-being. At Pham Dentistry, Dr. Thomas Pham provides comprehensive periodontal care to prevent, diagnose, and treat gum disease, ensuring your smile stays strong for years to come.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is a bacterial infection of the gums that destroys the soft tissue and bone that support your teeth. It is often caused by the buildup of plaque and tartar.

  • Gingivitis: The earliest stage, characterized by red, swollen gums that may bleed easily. It is often reversible with better hygiene and professional cleaning.
  • Periodontitis: If left untreated, the infection spreads to the bone, causing gums to pull away from teeth (recede) and form pockets. This can lead to tooth loss and has been linked to systemic health issues like heart disease and diabetes.

Our Periodontal Services

We offer targeted treatments to halt the progression of gum disease and restore your oral health:

  • Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning): This non-surgical procedure is the "gold standard" for treating chronic gum disease. We carefully remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line (scaling) and smooth the tooth roots (planing) to help gums reattach and prevent bacteria from returning.
  • Periodontal Maintenance: For patients with a history of gum disease, regular cleanings aren't enough. We provide deeper, more frequent maintenance cleanings (usually every 3-4 months) to keep the infection under control.
  • Antibiotic Therapy: In some cases, we may use localized antibiotics to help eliminate bacteria in deep gum pockets.

Signs You Need Periodontal Care

Healthy gums should be firm and pink. Call us if you notice:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss.
  • Persistent bad breath (halitosis).
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums.
  • Receding gums or teeth that appear "longer."
  • Loose or shifting teeth.

Your Partner in Gum Health

Dr. Pham believes in a gentle, non-judgmental approach. We will evaluate your gum health, explain your condition clearly, and create a personalized plan to get your oral health back on track.

FAQs

Is gum disease reversible?
The earliest stage, gingivitis, is reversible with professional cleaning and improved daily oral hygiene. However, once it progresses to periodontitis, the damage to the bone and tissue is permanent. The goal of treatment then shifts to halting the disease's progress and managing the condition to prevent tooth loss.
Does scaling and root planing hurt?
Your comfort is our top priority. We typically use a local anesthetic to numb your gums during scaling and root planing so you won't feel pain during the procedure. You might experience some mild sensitivity or tenderness afterward, which usually subsides within a few days.
Why do I need to come in every 3 or 4 months instead of 6?
If you have been treated for gum disease, the bacteria that cause the infection can repopulate much faster than in a healthy mouth. A standard 6-month cleaning interval allows the bacteria too much time to cause damage again. "Periodontal maintenance" visits every 3-4 months are essential to disrupt this bacterial growth and keep the disease inactive.
Can gum disease affect the rest of my body?
Yes. Extensive research has shown a strong link between periodontal disease and systemic health conditions. The bacteria from your gums can enter your bloodstream, potentially contributing to heart disease, stroke, diabetes complications, and respiratory issues. Treating your gums is truly an investment in your overall physical health.
